Visitors and external users

The Library is open to members of the public, visitors, school pupils and students at other institutions for reference and study purposes.

Upon joining the library, external users can borrow up to six 4-week loan items, but do not have have access to PCs or electronic resources. 

Visitors with their own equipment (laptop, tablet or smartphone) can use power outlets to plug in equipment, but will not have access to wi-fi.

To join, visit the Support Enquiry Zone (SEZ) on the ground floor of the Library and bring an acceptable form of ID with you.  This will avoid any delays in authorising your membership.‌ More information is available below for each type of external user.

Abertay University alumni, returned staff and Governors

Abertay University alumni

Students who have graduated from the University are usually entitled to free membership*, however, if you do not have a National Entitlement Card you can join at reduced rates - £12.50 per annum or £6.25 for 6 months.

To join the Library please bring your degree certificate, or other evidence of qualifications awarded, to the Support Enquiry Zone (SEZ) on Level 1. We will ask you to complete a membership form, but you can usually borrow immediately.

*Many former students will find that although their student card has expired the National Entitlement Card on the reverse is still valid, and can be used to join the Library free of charge.

Retired staff and governors of the University

Retired staff and governors of the University may also join the Library. Acceptable ID is a driving licence or passport. 

Resources

Abertay alumni, staff and governors do not have access to campus PCs or electronic resources. Free wi-fi (via the Cloud) is available on Level 1 for members of the public with their own wi-fi enabled devices.

You can borrow up to 6 4-week items.

Associate students

Once you have registered as an Associate Student, you can:

  • Borrow up to 12 books, either 1-week or 4-week items.
  • Access journals, DVDs, overnight loans and other materials for reference when visiting the Library.
  • Use the PCs, printing and photocopying services when visiting the Library.
  • Obtain support and advice on how to make the most of IT and Library resources.

Your Associate Student IT account

  • Once your registration has been processed, you will receive a confirmation email from the University of Abertay Dundee. This will contain details of your Associate Student IT account.
  • Before you can use your account, you must change your password.  Follow the instructions in the email you will be sent on registering. You will need to change your password every 120 days. You can do that here.
  • Your IT account does not give you permission to access the University's electronic online resources. However, check our Resources A-Z for a selection of Open Access resources. 

Students and staff from local colleges and universities

Dundee University students and staff

We have a reciprocal agreement with Dundee University which allows all Dundee University staff and students to join our library free of charge. Dundee University members do not have access to our PCs or electronic resource. Dundee University members may use their own laptop, tablet or phone in the Library and can access the internet through Eduroam. To join:

  • You must have no outstanding debts at Dundee University library.
  • You should complete the SCONUL Access application‌ which will be authorised at Dundee University Library
  • Bring your authorisation email to the Support Enquiry Zone (SEZ) on Level 1 of the Library, together with your Dundee University student or staff card.  You will then be asked to complete the Abertay University library membership form.
  • All authorised Dundee University staff and students will be able to borrow up to 6 x 4-week loans and to use the Library for study

Students and staff from other local colleges and universities

We have reciprocal borrowing agreements with most other local education instutitions which allows staff and students to join the Library free of charge. Members of local education establishments do not have access to PCs or electronic resources, other than through Eduroam.

Membership agreements exist with:

  • St. Andrews University
  • Dundee and Angus College
  • Fife College
  • Perth College
  • Elmwood College

Staff and students from any of these institutions should bring your student or staff ID to the Support Enquiry Zone (SEZ) on level 1 of the Library. Once we have verified your status and you have completed and signed your application form you can usually borrrow straight away.

College students

You can borrow up to 6 4-week items.

SCONUL Access

We are members of SCONUL Access , a reciprocal service supported by most of the Higher Education institutions in the UK. We offer free membership and borrowing (with some restrictions) to part-time, distance learning or placement students, full time postgraduate students, researchers and staff from SCONUL Access members. Full time undergraduate students from member institutions can apply to use the Library for reference. 

  • To join our library, complete the online application on the SCONUL Access website.
  • Your home institution will review your application and email you to say whether you are authorised to use the scheme.
  • If you have been authorised to borrow (Band A - C) you can complete our Library membership form
  • If you are a full time undergraduate student (Band R) you can use the Library for reference and study.
  • Bring your authorisation email in to the Support Enquiry Zone (SEZ) on Level 1 of the Library, along with your student card and we will complete your membership.
  • In most instances you will be able to use the Library immediately.
  • SCONUL Access members do not have access to PCs or electronic resources, other than through Eduroam.

NHS staff and corporate members

NHS staff

NHS staff employed in Tayside may join the Library free of charge. Complete the Library membership form‌ and bring it to the Support Enquiry Zone (SEZ) with your current NHS staff card and an additional form of ID (e.g. driving licence, passport, payslip etc).

Once you have signed your application, you can usually borrow immediately.

NHS staff do not have access to PCs or electronic resources.

Corporate members

Companies wishing to encourage their staff to use the Library can take out Corporate Membership. Our subscription rate is £50 per annuum for up to 5 members.  Rates for additional members are available on request. Contact the Support Enquiry Zone (SEZ). Email library@abertay.ac.uk with your requirements.

Corporate members do not have access to PCs or electronic resources.

School pupils

All S5 and S6 pupils and staff from secondary schools in Tayside can join the Library for free and borrow up to 6 books. You can also use the Library to study and revise. 

To join, bring your Young Scot card to the Support Enquiry Zone on Level 1 of the Library. See the campus map for the location of the Library.

You will be asked to complete a Library membership form and can usually borrow straight away. Your Young Scot card/National Entitlement Card will be your library card.

Class and group visits to the Library 

We also offer the opportunity for teachers or librarians to arrange class or group visits to the Library which include hands-on instruction from our Librarians. For more information, see Class and group visits to the Library. Staff accompanying pupils must complete a Child Protection form prior to their visit.

Members of the public

The Library is open to all users for reference and study without charge. Members of the public do not have access to PCs or electronic resources. If you wish to borrow our stock, you need to join the Library: 

National Entitlement Card holders

  • National Entitlement Card holders are entitled to free Library membership. National Entitlement Cards are routinely issued to older people, people with a disability and young people but any Dundee citizen outwith these groups can apply for a National Entitlement card through Dundee City Council. National Entitlement cards are also issued to Abertay staff and students. 
  • To join the Library bring your NEC to the Support Enquiry Zone on Level 1 of the Library.
  • Once you have completed and  signed a membership form, you will usually be able to borrow straight away as your National Entitlement Card will also be your University of Abertay Dundee library card.

Subscribers

  • If you are not eligible for free membership you may still join the Library. Our personal subscription rates are £25 per annum or £12.50 for 6 months.
  • To join the Library please come to the Support Enquiry Zone on Level 1 of the Library.
  • You will need some form of ID, for example a passport, driving license, utility bill etc.
  • Once you have signed your application form you can usually collect your card and borrow the same day.
